Burn Fellow Job Description:  August 1 st , 2023- July 31 st , 2024 The University of Rochester Medical Center in the Department of Plastic Surgery is accepting applications for a one-year non-ACGME accredited burn fellowship program in the Kessler Burn Center, a verified Burn Center by the American Burn Association in both pediatric and adult burns. Trainees will be instructed in the acute burn excision and reconstruction, rehabilitation, and reconstruction of delayed burn sequelae. This individual would also be involved in resuscitation of burn injuries and related disorders such as; SSS, SJS, and TENS, critical care management. The Kessler Burn Center is a verified adult and pediatric burn center comprised of 24 adult burn beds (ICU and floor) and 26 pediatric burn beds (ICU and floor) and an outpatient burn clinic that is connected to the main hospital.  There are approximately 300 burn admissions a year and 750 new outpatient burn visits per year.  Total outpatient visits per year is approximately 3000. There exists a dedicated pediatric and adult burn unit as well as dedicated operating rooms and an outpatient burn clinic consisting of dedicated nursing and APP staff. The didactic curriculum would include participation in weekly multidisciplinary rounds, QA/QI, monthly M&M conferences, and burn research. There would exist the opportunity for significant chronic wound experience and surgical intervention of such. The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) and Shriners Children’s – Texas in Galveston, Texas have acute burn fellowship position available for surgeons interested in acute management of burn patients.  Our one-year fellowship consists of four months on the burn service at Shriners Children’s – Texas, four months on adult burn service at the Blocker Burn Unit at the University of Texas Medical Branch, and four months in SICU at the University of Texas Medical Branch.

Burn fellows will have comprehensive experience in full spectrum of burn care including management of the most complex burn injuries.  There will be abundant operative opportunity during the fellowship. The Blocker Burn Unit treats adult patients with an annual admission of 260 patients.  Shriners Children’s – Texas admits about 300 pediatric burn patients annually, and patients routinely have burns greater than 40%.

Both the Blocker Burn Unit and Shriners Children’s – Texas are the American Burn Association and the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma verified burn centers.  After the completion of burn fellowship, fellows will be competent to manage all aspects of burn injury including children.

  Goals of the Program

Job Description:  The Evans-Haynes Burn Center is the oldest civilian burn facility in the United States. VCU Health has been granted Level 1 trauma center status since 1981 and is the only nationally verified burn center in Virginia. The Burn Fellowship is a year-long commitment that encompasses all aspects of burn care. The Fellow is particularly involved in the following:

• Care of both adult and pediatric burn patients
• Acute burn resuscitation
• Burn wound management including the use of artificial skin products, allograft, cultured epidermal autograft, and autologous epidermal autografts
• Functioning within a multidisciplinary team environment for care of complex patients

The Department of Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center and Parkland Hospital has two fellowship positions available for surgeons interested in advanced burn care.  Our one-year ACGME approved Burn/SCC Fellowship allows candidates to be board eligible in surgical critical care and obtain a burn certificate at the completion of their training.  Fellows spend six months on the burn service at Parkland Memorial Hospital with exposure to acute and reconstructive burn surgery. An additional three months in various ICU settings including SICU and CVICU.  Three months are elective, some choices include anesthesia, PICU, neurocritical care, echocardiography, ECMO and CCU.  Fellows also may spend 1-2 months as the chief of our trauma and acute care surgery service where they perform 60-80 cases per month.

The burn service at Parkland Hospital is composed of six faculty members and admits over 900 patients per year, including adult and pediatric patients.  The service performs over 600 burn and burn reconstructive cases per year and sees over 3000 patients in our outpatient clinic.  It is the only burn center in North Texas verified by the American Burn Association and the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma.  Additionally, Parkland Hospital admits over 2,000 trauma patients and performs over 3800 EGS and trauma procedures annually.

During the burn component of their year, fellows become proficient in all aspects of burn care and burn reconstructive surgery. This includes acute burn management and resuscitation, inhalation injuries, escharotomies, fasciotomies, skin grafting, amputations, and application of skin substitutes. Training in reconstructive care includes multimodal laser training and reconstructive procedures from local flaps and adjacent tissue rearrangements to pedicle and free tissue transfer. This also includes training for hand specific burn reconstruction. At the completion of the program, fellows are competent in treating all burn patients in the outpatient and inpatient setting.

Opportunities for research exist in basic science, clinical trials and outcomes.  The division is funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense and the American College of Surgeons.  Eligible candidates can work on various projects involving heterotopic ossification, muscle fibrosis, tissue regeneration, wound healing, nutrition, burn resuscitation, burn reconstruction outcomes, and quality improvement. Additionally, UTSW is a NIDDLR center for the BMS, allowing fellows to participate in outcomes data and multicenter institutional studies.

Indiana University offers two positions as a twelve month fellowship (July through June) focusing on all clinical aspects of acute and reconstructive burn care in both the adult and pediatric population.  The Richard M. Fairbanks Burn Center at Eskenazi Hospital houses a fifteen bed inpatient burn unit, all beds with ICU capabilities, in addition to private burn operating rooms, procedure rooms, multi-disciplinary ancillary services, and the outpatient clinic.  There are 300 admissions and 500 outpatient burns seen annually.  The burn team is led by the plastic surgery division with assistance from the surgical and pulmonary critical care teams in managing burn resuscitations, inhalation injuries, burn physiology derangements, wound care, and surgical debridements and wound closure in our acute burn patients.

The Speedway Burn Unit at Riley Hospital for Children houses a 10 bed burn unit, which is within walking distance from the adult hospital.  There are 120 admissions and 400 outpatient burns seen annually.  There are dedicated advanced practice providers to assist with daily patient care, outpatient evaluations, and coordinating burn reconstructions.  The burn team, with assistance from the PICU services, manages all medical aspects of acute burn care along with the surgical debridements, wound closures, and reconstructive procedures.

The fellows have the opportunity to not only participate in acute burn management, but also outside hospital acceptance, pre-hospital management, post-burn reconstruction, traumatic road rash injuries, and desquamating dermatologic conditions.  Providers are utilizing advanced wound coverage techniques including spray skin cells, cultured epithelial autografts, and dermal regenerative templates in addition to traditional autografting.  The reconstructive opportunities are robust as all patients are followed long term by the plastic surgery providers offering laser treatments, scar revisions, fat grafting, contracture releases, and tissue expansion if indicated.  On call responsibilities are rotating in a home call format, assisted by other residents and advanced practice providers.

The fellows are expected to participate in clinical research with the support of the burn unit resources, focused around some aspect of burn care, and submit work to one of the regional or the annual national burn meeting for presentation.  There are weekly conferences on Monday mornings as case indications discussions and Wednesday mornings as didactics focused around a topic in reconstructive and plastic surgery.  Additionally, the burn team joins in the trauma morbidity and mortality conference at Eskenazi quarterly.  At the end of the completion of the burn fellowship, the fellows will be expected to be competent in taking care of burn patients from admission to discharge as well as their long term reconstructive needs.

The UF Department of Surgery has a long tradition of training outstanding clinical surgeons and leaders in academic surgery. Now, we have created a Burn Surgical Fellowship Program.

The University of Florida College of Medicine Department of Surgery is accepting applications for a one-year non-ACGME accredited burn fellowship program in the UF Health Shands Burn Center. Trainees will be instructed in the acute resuscitation of burn injuries and related disorders, critical care management, acute burn excision and reconstruction, rehabilitation, and reconstruction of delayed burn sequelae.

The core of the Burn Center is its dedicated 27-bed inpatient unit which offers progressive care (ICU to floor) during a patient’s entire hospital stay. A dedicated burn operating room and outpatient burn clinic are co-located with the inpatient unit. The aim of the burn fellowship is to graduate well-trained and qualified surgeons who will practice in and lead multidisciplinary burn programs.

This non-ACGME accredited program provides one year of dedicated burn surgery training leading to a certificate of completion of a burn fellowship. Fellows will have 12 months of clinical education:

• Nine months of instruction in the fundamental surgical care of acute burn patients, including pre- and postoperative evaluation and care.
• Three months of instruction in pediatric-specific burn surgical care, surgical critical care, and advanced reconstructive surgery.
• Regular instruction in outpatient (burn clinic) management of burn injuries and their sequelae.

The extensive didactic curriculum includes multidisciplinary conferences, grand rounds, and journal club. Fellows will participate in the Burn Center quality improvement (QI) program and gain experience in the use of a burn registry. Attendance at professional society meetings will be subsidized, with the expectation that the fellow engages in burnrelated scholarly activity, including clinical research conducted in the Burn Center. The fellow will gain Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS) certification. The graduate of the burn fellowship will in most cases pursue an additional one-year surgical critical care (SCC) fellowship prior to or after burn training, including in the UF SCC fellowship program.

One position is available each academic year. The preferred applicant will be board eligible and have completed the core training requirements of an RRC-approved residency in general surgery or plastic surgery prior to fellowship admission. Individuals who have satisfactorily completed at least three years of training in an accredited general surgery or plastic surgery residency will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Burn and Reconstructive Centers of America is seeking medical professionals interested in completing a one-year burn fellowship.  Participants will be exposed to a multi-disciplinary approach to burn care for adult and pediatric patients. Fellows will shadow a range of burn and reconstructive surgeons and other medical professionals at the nation’s largest burn center – the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital in Augusta, GA, which is verified by the American Burn Association. BRCA surgeons treat patients for a wide range of injuries, including chemical, electrical and thermal burns, skin and soft tissue disorders and complex wounds.

BRCA is the nation’s largest burn network with more than 343 beds and 16 facilities covering nine states including Idaho, Colorado, Texas, Nevada, South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, Florida and Virginia. The cornerstone of the network, JMS Burn Center at Doctors Hospital in Augusta, Georgia, sits as the largest individual center in America with 92 total beds, including 36 in the Intensive Care Unit. In February 2021, we will open a state of the art burn tower on the campus of Doctors Hospital. The new facility will increase our bed count to 99 and increase our total number of dedicated burn operating rooms to 8.

The Burn Fellowship at the University of California San Diego is based at the UC San Diego Health Hillcrest campus center at the Regional Burn Center.  It is a track within the ACGME Surgical Critical Care Fellowship. The Burn Fellowship includes all aspects of acute and reconstructive burn care as well as adult and pediatric intensive care. The Fellowship will provide the trainee experience in acute resuscitation, operative treatment, critical care, burn rehabilitation, and burn scar reconstruction. The schedule has a minimum of six months in the Burn center, at least one month of Trauma Critical Care and at least two months of Surgical Critical Care within the ACS verified Level 1 Trauma Center. This schedule allows training in all aspects of burn treatment while making the fellow eligible for board certification in Surgical Critical Care. An option for a combination with the two year American Association for Surgery of Trauma (AAST) Acute Care Surgery (ACS) fellowship at UC San Diego exists.  The Burn Unit is verified by the American Burn Association and the American College of Surgeons and admits 400 adult and pediatric patients each year.

Counties Manukau Health Board are inviting applications for a Burn Fellowship to join the Burn Team. The Fellowship has been in place since 2007 and is unique and sought after because it covers comprehensive care for both adult and paediatric patients, in the acute, rehabilitative and reconstructive phases of treatment.  There is protected research time and an expectation to participate in research and publishing opportunities.  We have around 5000 Elective procedures per year, complex breast reconstruction, Head /Neck and ENT reconstruction, Adult and Paediatric Cranial/facial/cleft surgery to name a few. The Burn Team cares for the most severe burn injuries from New Zealand and around the Pacific.  Our Fellows are also exposed to critical care whilst working closely with our Intensive care team.

The Fellowship is based around the National Burn Centre (NBC) located within Middlemore Hospital. The NBC is a 10 bed a ‘state of the art’ facility and forms the corner piece of the National Burn Service of New Zealand The Burn Team is part of the Auckland Regional Centre for Plastic Reconstructive & Hand Surgery at Middlemore Hospital, one of the largest and most dynamic in the Southern Hemisphere with 20 plastic surgeons and 6 Orthopaedic Hand surgeons. The Burn Fellowship at the Nathan Speare Regional Burn Treatment Center at Crozer Chester Medical Center. The fellowship is a non-accredited, one-year clinical training experience based in the burn unit at Crozer, Upland (suburban), PA. The Burn Unit is verified by the American Burn Association/American College of Surgeons and admits 450 adult and pediatric patients each year. The fellowship includes all aspects of acute and reconstructive burn care as well as adult intensive care. The Burn Treatment Center maintains a strong relationship with Nemours/Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children.

Nathan Speare Regional Burn Treatment Center has earned an international reputation for excellence in holistic burn care, treating more than 10,000 patients since 1973. The UW Medicine Regional Burn Center at Haborview Medical Center offers two positions in an ACGME-accredited, one-year fellowship with emphasis on burn care, burn system development, critical care, and quality improvement programming. Graduating fellows will be eligible for the Surgical Critical Care certificate offered by the American Board of Surgery. Burn Critical Care fellows oversee the triage and management of acutely burned patients from the Pacific Northwest and Alaska at a high-volume regional burn and trauma center. Fellow are integral in the surgical planning and care of burn patients and lead the multidisciplinary burn team in both intensive and acute care. The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics seeks surgical residents or board eligible surgical graduates for a one year BURN FELLOWSHIP with option second year as the Surgical Critical Care Fellow. With burn admissions around 300 annually, the trainee will acquire in-depth experience in the management of the entire spectrum of burn, complex wound care, and critical care in the setting of a tertiary university teaching hospital. Educational opportunities include journal clubs and morbidity and mortality conferences. The trainee will also be given an opportunity to participate in clinical research with a chance to present at a national meeting. Upon completion of the one year Burn Fellowship, the trainee, if they meet the ACGME accredited Surgical Critical Care Fellowship requirements, can complete a second year as the critical care fellow in the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship. This will allow the trainee to sit for the American Board of Surgery Examination in Surgical Critical Care.

Ideal candidates for our program must have completed/be completing an ACGME General Surgery and/or Plastic Surgery residency and be eligible for certification by the American Board of Surgery. International graduates will be evaluated on an individual basis. Applicants interested in stepping out of their general surgery or plastics residency for fellowship are reviewed on an individual basis, but must have completed a minimum of two years residency.
